IMAP | Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is an internet protocol with which e-mails are loaded and edited/administered. Unlike more commonly used POP3-protocols, e-mails are not transferred from the web-server to the user's computer, but remain on the web server, which allows access to the mailbox from any computer with internet access. |
internet | Today, the internet consists of a combination of state-run, industrial, academic, and partially military networks located all over the world. Thanks to the world-wide web, it is no longer a problem to communicate with anyone one earth, anywhere on earth. Organizations, associations, enterprises, and everyone else can create a presence in the internet, so that any internet user can view their internet site. Over 1,2 billion people are connected to the world-wide web. The internet was created in 1969, originally as an American "research network", designed to operate under unfavourable conditions. It was developed by the advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), commissioned by the US Department of Defense. The network needed to be flexible enough to prevent a system-block or complete failure of the system in case one computer malfunctioned. That is why not only one main computer was relied upon, but a number of computer systems all over the US worked together in an disparate network to assure reliablity and functionality. In 1969, the Arpanet was created, consisting of only four computers. By 1970, 50 military research facilities and universities were already integrated into the network. In the beginning of the 80?s, the first private computers were connected to the network, officially introducing the general term "Internet" for all TCP/IP-protocol-based parts of the Arpanet. Mid 1980's, the National Science Foundation (NSF), a parent organization of various academic facilities in the US, began to connect these in the common network via the internet. At this time, they presented the majority of the internet users. |
IP-addresses | IP-addresses are the computer addresses in the internet. Every requested information paket sent through the internet when calling-up a webpage, is assigned an IP-address. The information is thus mediated through the switch-port to the correct receipient. Each IP-address is assigned only once and is therefore unique in the world-wide web. |
