Glossary
The following glossary includes a total of 62 terms, deriving from the fields of internet (general), Domains, Hosting, Internet-Technologies, etc. should a term be missing from our list, please feel free to contact us.
secure FTP | Secure FTP ("Secure File Transfer Protocol") is a network protocol that transfers coded data. It is a combination of an unsecured FTP-connection and Secure Shell. |
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) | Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a communication protocol that safely codes data in the internet. By coding the data, the data that is otherwise easily intercepted is then safely transported through the internet. Only the website operator can decipher the visitors' information. The same is true for information and data that the user/visitor receives from a website; it is only encoded and deciphered once it is transferred onto the user's computer. The encoding-rate is currently at a 256 bit standard. SSL-connections are recognizable in the protocol as "HTTPS://" addresses. |
Server Side Includes (SSI) | Server Side Includes (SSI) is the integration of foreign documents onto a page by using simple script commands. This allows the content of the users own page to be edited or altered without destroying the program-frame. Server Side Includes were originally developed for Apache-Servers but are by now installed on almost all webservers. |
server-hosting | Server-hosting offers the customer the complete hard- and software for his own webserver online, through a service provider. The customer receives all administration rights and can thereby edit and alter all server-settings. |
server-housing | With server-housing, the internet service provider offers the customer an internet connection for the users own server. The businesses each administer their own server. The providers data centers have access to an optimal infrastructure and net-connection, as well as an uninterupted power supply. Storing a server (privately) is usually very expensive. |
SMTP | The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is used to transmit e-mails in the internet network. It is primarily used to send electronic mail messages. Most SMTP servers reqest a user authorization, in the form of a password, in order to prevent spam. |
spam | Spam-mails, also called bulk-mails, are undesired ad-mails that are sent to internet users. Spam costs the USA 22 billion US Dollars yearly by congesting and blocking the information superhighway and must often be sorted out manually, if the filter does not detect them. For the senders of such spam mails, called spammers, it is a worthwhile, though illegal business: The advertisers have no significant costs; every thousandth spam mail is rewarded with a purchase. |
SSH | SSH (Secure Shell) allows an encrypted connection between network computers that allows the user to directly load and execute programs. Access via SSH is independent of the location and type of computer that is to be controlled. |
support | Support is the handling and solving of customer concerns. The support is usually a three-step system: the first-level-support responds to the customer's general questions and concerns. The second-level staff members train the first-level members and assist in repling to more complicated customer concerns. On the third level, experts of various departments work in collaboration to meet customer needs. |
